Yount Most Valuable Player
Fausto Ortiz has rapidly become the league's most intimidating hitter. In only 149 games, Ortiz delivered extraordinary stats for the Reds, who advanced to the World Series. Initially a cost-effective signing as an international free agent in Season 51, Ortiz joined for $8M from the Dominican Republic. He then hit 190 home runs over four minor league seasons and made a sensational debut as Rookie of the Year in Season 55. While Ortiz's defense may not be stellar, it's a trade-off for his exceptional batting skills. Unfortunately for the rest of the National League, he's secured under contract until Season 63 with a modest $5.4M salary, allowing the Reds to strategically build around him.
Yount Cy Young
The first-ballot Hall of Famer had another remarkable year, finishing with a WHIP under one for the first time since Season 54 in Tampa. While Pena's numbers this season are impressive, they may rank as his second or third-best season, depending on how one views them. The Yount career leader in WHIP and ERA consistently delivers strong performances, keeping the Cardinals as perennial contenders.
With two years remaining on a maximum contract, the question arises: does Pena have enough left in the tank to reach 300 career wins? Currently sitting at 202 wins, he likely needs another 6 to 7 years to achieve that milestone. Regardless, unless Wily Cespedes proves to be the player everyone anticipates, it seems unlikely that Pena’s statistics, along with those of his contemporary Pickford, will be surpassed.
Yount Rookie of the Year
It was only a matter of time before Angels players began receiving recognition at the awards, thanks to the leadership of Pimpbotlove. The fourth overall pick in the Season 53 draft, Cousins hailed from York Comprehensive High School in York, South Carolina. He progressed slowly through the minor leagues, starting the season in Triple-A before being called up after just six games. Once promoted, he quickly established himself as the ace of the young Angels team, which went on to win the division and qualify for the playoffs. Although Cousins is not a high-volume innings eater, he is highly effective and is expected to be a mainstay in the American League moving forward.
Yount Fireman of the Year
It was an unusual year for relief pitchers, as many teams adopted a bullpen-by-committee approach instead of relying on traditional closers, resulting in lower save totals. However, Siegrest stands out for his performance; he pitched in 75 games and recorded 50 saves. The downside is that he also had nine blown saves and nine losses, but we'll take a consistent closer like him. He hit arbitration this year and is a bargain at $1.49 million. Given that the trend in Cincinnati has been to offer a contract in the second year of arbitration, it will be an interesting offseason for the Reds, who are likely to be favorites in the National League again.
